Veterans Day

November 11th is Veterans Day.  The date comes from the fact that an armistice was declared during World War I between the Allied Nations and Germany on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For more history – please see the following link - http://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp.
All that we hold dear as Americans is a result of our veterans and their service to our country over the years.  Remember our veterans today.

  1. 11 November is quite an important day in the calender here in the UK. For a couple of weeks before, ex-servicemen from the Royal British Legion sell paper poppies which we wear in our lapels to remember the fallen. The money raised helps servicemen and ex-servicemen in need.

Then on the nearest Sunday before the 11th (this year it fell on a Sunday of course) There is a big ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall which is where Downing Street is. The Queen and prominent politicians and members of the armed forces lay wreaths of poppies. There is a two minute silence at 11am which is when hostilities ended in WW1. The nation observes this silence. This two minute silence will be marked again on the 11th if it does not fall on a Sunday. At work, or in the shops, wherever you are, an announcement is made and everyone stands in silence to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country in wars now and in the past.
